Holding a Party in Your Garage? 4 Tips to Get Ready

Do you need a good spot to have a party? Why not the garage? With a little prep work, you can turn your garage into a fantastic place to have a fun gathering this summer.

Most garages are a little messy. Before you have your party, you’ll need to clear the space, test the garage door, and get chemicals out of the way. Here’s what we suggest as you plan your party in the garage.

1. Test the Garage Door

One of the great advantages of having a party in your garage is the ability to open the garage to let in the fresh air and to create a place where people can mingle near the driveway.

Test your garage door to be sure it’s working. Open the door and close it. Listen for clanging or grinding noises that could indicate something might be going wrong with your door. Test the safety features to ensure that your garage door’s photoelectric eye is functioning. This will help prevent any accidents during your party.

Not sure how to test the photoelectric eye? Start with the garage door in the open position. As the door is closing, wave a broomstick in the path of the closing door.

The garage door should reverse course. If it doesn’t, try cleaning the photoelectric eyes near the bottom of the door, then try again. If the door continues to have trouble, contact a garage door repair person.

2. Clean the Garage

Garages tend to be dirty places, and that’s not ideal for a party. Clean your garage to get rid of dirt and grime on the floor and on the windows.

You can do this by mopping, by spraying the ground with a strong jet of water from a hose, or by scrubbing on your hands and knees with a sponge. Clean your garage until it gleams.

3. Get Chemicals Out Of the Way

Garages provide storage for cleaning chemicals, lawn chemicals, and so on. This can be dangerous during a party. You definitely don’t want dangerous chemicals to be in a location where they can be accessed by children or pets that may come to your party.

Lock up chemicals in a cabinet or shelf, bring them indoors into your basement or utility room, or put them in your backyard shed. Do whatever needs to be done to keep them out of the way.

4. Clear Space

Make space for your party by cleaning out your garage. Get rid of items you don’t need, put items into modular storage around the walls of your garage, or bring items into your house. The less space that’s taken up by items that need to be stored, the better.
