The Great Garage Spring Cleaning Guide

Warm weather is nearly here – it’s time for garage spring cleaning! This project makes it easier to find the items you keep in your garage, while also making room for your car. Garages can be messy spaces, so spring cleaning efforts can feel overwhelming if you don’t approach the task logically. We’ve got some suggestions that can help.

Sort, Recycle, Sell, Throw Away

Sort through everything in your garage. Make four piles as you sort: one for keeping, one for recycling, one for selling, and one for throwing away.

If you’re having a hard time deciding what you still need and what must be thrown away, make a rule to get rid of any item that you haven’t used in the last two years. Read expiration dates on chemicals. Sort through items like drywall compound and paint cans, and get rid of anything that is either dried out or gotten moldy.

Install Organizational Systems

Install shelving and a loft in your garage to create spaces where you can keep items up and off the garage floor. If you’re installing a loft area in your garage, hire a contractor to ensure that the loft area is installed properly. If you’re doing the work yourself, be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions and use a stud finder to get the loft properly secured.

Take Everything Out

If you’ve got time, take the items out of your garage as you sort through them. Taking everything out makes it easier to put everything back in a way that is logical and organized.

Hose It Down

Dirt and grime can build up in the garage easily, and once it’s there, it’s hard to get rid of. If you take everything out of the garage for sorting, this is the perfect time to clean the floors and the shelves. Hose down the floors, and use a sponge soaked in warm, soapy water to clean shelves, cabinets, and other surfaces that sit above the ground.

Wash the Windows

Dirty windows block the sun, which in turn can leave your garage looking darker and messier than it really is. Take some time to clean the windows, including the windows in the garage door. To clean your windows, use a combination of vinegar and water. Wipe the grime away with a microfiber cloth.

Watch for Signs of Pests

Pests can be a problem in the garage. While you’re cleaning, watch for signs that your garage has an infestation. If you notice droppings or evidence of a rodent nest, contact a pest control company to take care of the problem.

Air It Out

Let your garage air out while it’s being cleaned. Fresh air will help eliminate any odors in your garage – and will get rid of the scent of any chemicals in the air left by the cleaning products.
